What to expect at Food Safety Conference 2022

The New Food editorial team guide you through two action-packed days of content at The Food safety Conference 2022.

After nearly two years of fully virtual events, we are so excited to welcome you back to our first in-person event in London for New Food’s annual flagship summit.

This event places some of the food and drink sector’s current major challenges in the spotlight. By assessing and debating some of the industry’s most challenging topics – including food safety, sustainability, transparency, trust and food safety culture – we aim to shed light on the things we may not want to know, but certainly should.

On day one we will be examining where our food system is now. Our opening keynote is entitled “A Broken System”, with Food Foundation Executive Director Anna Taylor explaining why that description is apt for our current food system. Other sessions to look out for on day one of the conference include a look at the three i’s: inflation, insecurity and inaccessibility, plus we’ll be asking whether more stringent allergen controls are required in restaurants or not.

In the afternoon, you can expect some fascinating insight from HelloFresh during Meal Kit 101, plus a star-studded panel for Rethinking recalls. We’ll close out the day with a debate: Should we be fortifying foods? You can decide after you hear the pros and cons from our experts.

If day one was about the hear and now, then day two is all about the future. We kick things off with food safety expert Alec Kyriakides highlighting some food safety risks that might emerge as we look ahead after the pandemic. We’ll be scanning the horizon after that for potential challenges, whether that’s tetrodotoxin being detected in oysters in the English Channel or the rampant increase in dark kitchens and online marketplaces.

Highlights of the afternoon include a debate on whether use-by dates should be scrapped or not to reduce food waste, a look at the very latest food and beverage trends, plus asking how businesses can ensure compliance across borders.

To close out the day and indeed the event, we’ll be taking a stern look at greenwashing, and asking: Is it the new food fraud?

Alongside an action-packed two days of content, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to catch up with friends and colleagues over a cup of coffee or a spot of lunch, plus by attending in-person you’ll be able to put questions to our expert line up of speakers as they present throughout the day.
