dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health and Bayer have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to accelerate sustainability across the animal agriculture sector through enhanced environmental footprint measurement.
The agreement integrates Bayer’s expertise in primary crop life cycle assessment (LCA) data with dsm-firmenich’s Sustell™ platform – an ISO-assured environmental footprinting solution for animal protein. Together, the two companies aim to provide farmers and food producers with reliable, actionable insights to measure and reduce the environmental impact of animal protein production.
With rising pressure from consumers, retailers, and investors for transparent sustainability reporting, access to high-quality, primary data from crop to feed to farm is becoming essential.
Since 2020, Bayer has supported the measurement of carbon footprints in crop production, while Sustell™, developed by dsm-firmenich, is recognised as one of the most advanced systems for environmental impact assessment within the animal protein sector.
By combining these technologies, the collaboration establishes a new benchmark for transparency, traceability, and sustainability from crop production to processed animal products.
Lionnel Alexandre, EMEA Head of Ecosystem Services at Bayer, said:
The ability to accurately measure, valorise, and recognise the real efforts made by farmers is a critical milestone toward long-term, viable and regenerative agriculture.”
David Nickell, VP Sustainability and Business Solutions and Head of Sustell™ at dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, added:
This collaboration will enable companies to gain more accurate insights into the sustainability of their animal protein supply chains while unlocking significant value opportunities.”
This initiative reflects both companies’ shared commitment to driving sustainability, innovation, and resilience within global food production — supporting a more transparent and regenerative future for animal agriculture.
