Tuna products recalled across seven US states over listeria contamination risk

Reser’s Fine Foods is voluntarily recalling multiple tuna salad products sold across seven US states due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The affected products, sold in Albertsons, Randalls, Tom Thumb and Jewel Osco stores, contain breadcrumbs suspected of harbouring the harmful bacteria.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the recall impacts stores in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa.

What is listeria and what is the risk?

Listeria is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the US, causing around 260 fatalities annually. It was also the second leading cause of food recalls in 2024, accounting for nearly 15 percent of recall events, surpassed only by labelling errors.

Listeria monocytogenes poses significant health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems.

Listeriosis, the infection caused by listeria, can produce severe symptoms including fever, headache, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. In pregnant women, the infection can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or life-threatening infections in newborns.

No illnesses or injuries linked to the recalled tuna have been reported to date.

FDA’S advice for consumers

The FDA strongly advises consumers to avoid eating the affected items and to either discard them or return them to the store for a full refund.

The agency added:

The FDA recommends in these cases that anyone who purchased or received any recalled products to use extra vigilance in cleaning and sanitising any surfaces and containers that may have come in contact with these products to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Listeria monocytogenes can survive in refrigerated temperatures and can easily spread to other foods and surfaces.”

Consumers with concerns or questions are encouraged to contact Albertsons Companies’ Customer Service Center at 1-877-723-3929, available Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. PST.
