Waitrose invests in Bristol distribution centre to enhance South West supply chain

Waitrose has announced a multi-million-pound investment in a new 360,000sq ft distribution centre at Mountpark’s Bristol 360 logistics site, marking the retailer’s first dedicated supply hub in the South West of England.

The facility, scheduled to open towards the end of 2026, will serve around 50 existing Waitrose stores in the region, with capacity to support future expansion.

The new centre is part of Waitrose’s broader strategy to modernise its supply chain and accommodate planned growth, including new convenience and full-line stores across the UK. Last month, Waitrose revealed plans for a store at Brabazon in north Bristol, due to open in 2027, and later this year it will launch a convenience store in The Arches, Bristol.

Sustainability commitment

Alison Maffin, Waitrose’s Supply Chain Director, said:

This multi-million pound investment is an important step in modernising our supply chain and setting us up to build the capacity needed for our growth plans. It will enable us to better serve our customers in the region, more efficiently supply our existing shops and reduce our operating costs and carbon emissions. The modern and sustainable features of Mountpark’s Bristol 360 make it an excellent fit for our business.”

Bristol 360 is a modern, energy-efficient logistics facility featuring over 1,200 solar panels, landscaped gardens, and natural light-optimised warehouse areas. It holds a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating and EPC A+ certification.

The site’s design will significantly improve energy efficiency throughout its operations, supporting Waitrose’s sustainability commitments. Waitrose estimates the new distribution centre will reduce annual supply chain mileage by 2,225 tonnes of CO2, supporting its commitment to become net zero carbon by 2035 and fossil fuel free by 2030.

Bart Holt-Smith, Director of Capital Markets and Development at Mountpark, welcomed the partnership:

Waitrose’s commitment to Mountpark Bristol 360 is a strong endorsement of our ability to meet the demands of modern logistics from commercial performance to environmental responsibility. We’re proud to be working with a brand of Waitrose’s calibre and delighted that our shared commitment to sustainability and quality aligns so closely. We look forward to welcoming this iconic British retailer and supporting its continued success in the region.”

Meeting current and future supply needs

Waitrose currently operates four regional distribution centres across the UK — Aylesford, Bracknell, Brinklow, and Leyland — alongside three national hubs in Milton Keynes, Greenford (London), and Reading. It also runs two fulfilment centres in Greater London for online orders. The new Bristol site will be the first regional centre dedicated to the South West, improving delivery efficiency for stores in the area.

Located at Central Park, Avonmouth, Bristol 360 is one of the South West’s key logistics hubs. Its strategic location will be enhanced by the forthcoming M49 motorway junction, improving access to the UK’s motorway and freight networks.

Waitrose will now select a logistics supplier to operate the site and equip the centre with modern warehousing technology that meets its current and future supply needs.
