Coca-Cola has issued a recall of Topo Chico Mineral Water sold in Costco stores in Texas and Louisiana due to concerns over potential bacterial contamination.
What’s behind the recall?
The voluntary recall applies to 18-packs of Topo Chico Mineral Water sold between 20 May and 29 May 2025. The affected bottles are marked with the lot number 13A2541, which can be found on both the case packaging and the neck of each bottle.
The recall was prompted by the potential presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium commonly found in water sources. While the health risk is considered very low for most people, those with weakened immune systems could experience minor health effects.
In a statement, Coca-Cola said: “The safety and quality of our products is our top priority.”
What consumers should do
Customers are advised to return any affected bottles to their local Costco for a full refund. For further information, consumers can contact Coca-Cola directly at 1-800-GET-COKE.
Previous concerns over PFAS contamination
This recall comes after earlier concerns raised in 2020, when a Consumer Reports investigation found elevated levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Topo Chico Mineral Water. These “forever chemicals” persist in the environment and can accumulate in the body over time. Although the levels detected were within legal limits, the findings prompted Coca-Cola to implement measures to reduce PFAS levels in its products, reinforcing its commitment to consumer safety.
