The FDA has upgraded the 2025 tomato recall linked to salmonella contamination to Class I risk, warning of serious health dangers including death.

The FDA has escalated a voluntary recall of tomatoes distributed by Williams Farms Repack LLC, citing a heightened risk of severe illness and death linked to salmonella contamination.
Details of the recall
The recall involves H&C Farms Label tomatoes distributed to wholesalers across South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia between 23 and 28 April. Package sizes ranged from three-packs to 25-pound bags.
Originally announced in early May, the recall was recently upgraded by the FDA to Class I, the highest severity level. This indicates a reasonable probability that exposure to the contaminated product could result in serious adverse health consequences or death.
Consumer advice and risk
Although no illnesses have yet been reported, consumers are urged to discard any affected tomatoes immediately. The FDA warns that frozen tomatoes from the contaminated batch may still pose a risk since salmonella can survive for weeks in wet environments like freezers.
The source of the contamination remains unknown.
Wider recall impacts multiple distributors
This recall is part of a broader issue affecting multiple distributors. On 2 May, Ray & Mascari Inc recalled four-packs of Vine Ripe tomatoes after notification from Hanshaw & Caping Farms in Immokalee, Florida, about potential salmonella contamination.
These tomatoes were sold through Gordon Food Service Stores across 12 states including Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania. No illnesses have been linked to the Vine Ripe tomatoes either.
Salmonella symptoms and prevention
Salmonella infection symptoms include diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea and vomiting. Prompt disposal of affected products is essential to prevent foodborne illness.
