The European Federation of Associations of Health Product Manufacturers (EHPM) last month became a member of the European Commission’s Advisory Group on the Food Chain and Animal and Plant Health.

EHPM joins eight other new members all appointed to the group on April 14 through a Commission Decision published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

The aim of the group is for the European Commission to consult it on its programme of work on food and feed safety; food and feed labelling and presentation; human nutrition in relation to food legislation; animal health and welfare; plant health, consumer protection and any measures that the European Commission must take or propose in these fields.

The new appointments bring the total number of Advisory Group members to 45.

“We are delighted to have been accepted as a member of the Advisory Group,” said EHPM Chairman Peter van Doorn. “This is certainly a recognition of EHPM’s value in discussions with the European Commission regarding food issues relevant for the sector. We have continuing serious concerns about the impact on the sector of the growing number of regulatory issues currently underway, for example the assessment procedure for article 13.1 health claims and various aspects of the draft food labelling regulation. We will continue to work towards ensuring that regulatory frameworks for food supplements in Europe provide opportunities for the industry to offer consumers access to a wide range of safe products of good quality bearing useful consumer information.”
