The manufacturer will modernise its Slough chocolate factory with AI, robotics and digital manufacturing technology under a £190 million investment programme.

Mars invests £190m in AI-driven Slough chocolate factory transformation

Mars has announced a £190 million investment to modernise its historic Slough chocolate factory, introducing AI-driven production systems, robotics and advanced manufacturing technology at the UK site.

The investment will transform the Berkshire factory into a next-generation manufacturing hub producing brands including Galaxy, Maltesers and the Mars bar for the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands. Mars has committed £32 million of the total investment for 2027-2028, building on more than £118 million invested across its UK Snacking, Food and Petcare operations during 2024 and 2025.

A key part of the programme will see Mars deploy digital twin technology at the factory, using AI-powered data to optimise production, improve consistency and reduce waste. The business said the technology will help operators make real-time decisions on the factory floor while delivering greater process control across production lines.

Mars will also install upgraded machinery, advanced cooling systems and energy-efficient utilities alongside new robotics and automation capabilities to improve factory performance and sustainability.

This investment reflects our confidence in the UK as a hub to manufacture and innovate. In taking a long-term view, we are ensuring our operations remain world-class, competitive and fit for the future.

Our Slough factory is deeply rooted in our heritage, and as a proud family-owned business, we are committed to investing in a future that creates lasting, positive impact for the communities in which we operate.”

AI and skills investment

Mars said the investment will also support workforce upskilling, creating new career pathways in advanced engineering, automation, data and AI-enabled manufacturing.

Founded in 1932 by Forrest Mars, the Slough site remains one of the company’s largest UK manufacturing operations and employs more than 1,850 people.

This £190 million investment by Mars is a strong vote of confidence in the UK as a place to manufacture and innovate. For nearly a century, the Slough factory has produced some of the world’s best loved brands, and this investment shows global businesses continuing to back British skills, workers and industry.”

Mars also continues to support community and apprenticeship initiatives in Slough through volunteering programmes, food bank partnerships and school engagement projects designed to increase apprenticeship uptake and diversity.

Mars has been part of our community in Slough for almost a century and remains one of our major local employers. It also plays an important role beyond the factory gates - supporting community organisations, volunteering, and helping young people into apprenticeships.

This £195 million investment is a clear vote of confidence in our local economy and workforce. I welcome the long-term commitment Mars continues to show to our community.”
