UMass Amherst’s Future of Food Initiative will fund a 36,000-square-foot research facility, a new interdisciplinary centre and four endowed academic positions.
The University of Massachusetts Amherst is launching a $120 million initiative aimed at tackling major challenges facing the global food system, including climate change, food safety and the need to feed a growing population.
The Future of Food Initiative will fund a new 36,000-square-foot research facility, a multidisciplinary research centre, an endowed chair in food science and three endowed faculty positions.
The university said the initiative will focus on issues including sustainable food production, food security, nutrition and the development of new technologies across the food system.
New research hub planned
The initiative will be funded through four $30 million contributions from Paul and Diane Manning through their family foundation, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, UMass Amherst and a further $30 million to be raised by the UMass Amherst Foundation.
A key part of the investment will be the Paul and Diane Manning Food Innovation Hub, which is expected to break ground on campus in late 2027.
The facility will include sensory testing laboratories, innovation kitchens, a food-grade pilot plant, a clinical testing laboratory and food demonstration kitchen. It will also provide space for food product development, sustainable processing, food safety research and training for food entrepreneurs.

Research across disciplines
The university will also establish the Center for the Future of Food, bringing together researchers from food science, agricultural sciences, nutrition, public health, engineering, computer science, business and other disciplines.
The centre will work with external partners and the university’s Institute of Applied Life Sciences to investigate areas including food safety and security, food chemistry, new food products, processing and cultivation.
Research will also examine emerging technologies and trends such as artificial intelligence and robotics, precision nutrition and food-as-medicine approaches.
The centre will then look to move beyond generating research by turning scientific discoveries into technologies, products and practices that can improve food systems.

Major private investment
Paul Manning, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of PBM Capital, and his wife Diane are providing $30 million through their family foundation, reflecting their belief that investment in food research can deliver benefits across both industry and public health.
“Food touches everyone and there are enormous opportunities to improve how we produce it, make it safer and healthier, and better understand the connection between food and human health,” said Manning.
The university says the investment could also support economic growth in Massachusetts by attracting businesses, strengthening local food producers and expanding the workforce available to the food industry. These ambitions come as the global food system faces growing pressure from climate change, population growth and changing consumer needs, with UMass Amherst aiming to develop research and technologies that can help create a more sustainable and resilient food system.
