Scotch Whisky becomes first international product to receive GI Status in Argentina

Argentina has officially recognised Scotch Whisky as the first international product to receive Geographical Indication (GI) status in the country, a significant milestone for British exports.

This legal protection guarantees that only whisky produced in Scotland, following strict regulations, can be labelled “Scotch Whisky” in Argentina.

This protection defends Scotch Whisky against counterfeiting and imitation in a key emerging market, affirming the spirit’s centuries-old craftsmanship and distinctive Scottish character.

Daniel Zeichner, UK Minister for Food Security and Rural Affairs, described the move as “another triumph for this world-class British export.”

He added:

In just six months we’ve driven a breakthrough trade agreement with India while securing legal protections for dozens of beloved British products across the globe – from the markets of São Paulo to the streets of Tokyo.

This government won’t stop here. We’re unlocking doors for UK exporters worldwide, putting British products on more shelves and tables – delivering real economic growth as part of our Plan for Change.””

Rising global demand for British food and drink

The recognition reflects rising global demand for authentic British food and drink. British exports reached record levels in 2024, with GI products accounting for approximately 25 percent of all UK food and drink exports, valued at over £6 billion annually.

Trade Minister Douglas Alexander emphasised Argentina’s GI protection as “a testament to not only the strength of our trade ties with Argentina, but the prestige and reach of Scotland’s world-renowned product.”

He also pointed to the UK-India trade deal, which “slashes whisky tariffs by half immediately and then down even further in the years to come,” as part of efforts to “boost Scotland’s businesses and deliver economic growth under the Plan for Change.”

Scottish Secretary Ian Murray praised the UK Government and Scotch Whisky Association collaboration:

There is no substitute for authentic Scotch Whisky and it’s fantastic news that collaborative work between the UK Government and Scotch Whisky Association has convinced the Argentine authorities to give our national drink – and one of our biggest exports – the protection it deserves.

This is excellent news to all the whisky producers who put Scotland on the global stage with our world-famous spirit. Salud!”

Why GI status matters

Geographical Indication status is a form of intellectual property protection linking a product to a specific location and production method, ensuring authenticity and quality. For Scotch Whisky, this means only whisky distilled and matured in Scotland under strict legal standards can use the name.

GI protection is crucial in markets vulnerable to counterfeit or imitation products, which risk damaging brand reputation and consumer trust. It assures consumers they are purchasing genuine Scotch Whisky and gives distillers confidence to invest and grow in international markets.

Scotch Whisky’s global footprint

Scotch Whisky is one of the UK’s most valuable export sectors, contributing around £5.5 billion annually to the Scottish economy and supporting over 40,000 jobs. It is exported to more than 150 countries, with growing demand in Latin America, Asia, and Africa.

Argentina, with its sophisticated whisky consumer base and growing appreciation for premium spirits, represents a key market. The GI recognition follows recent UK government-backed successes, including protected status for 39 British food and drink specialities in Japan and a 50 percent tariff reduction on Scotch Whisky in India.
