Our factbook
Capability, Capacity and Expertise
Approximately 1,800 people worldwide are employed in development, manufacturing and support of Oxoid brand products.
This includes a team of microbiologists dedicated to research and development of novel methods of testing for food-borne pathogens.
This team often work closely with acknowledged experts in the food industry to develop products that will make product testing within food microbiology laboratories faster and more efficient, and allow them to release products safe in the knowledge that they are free from food pathogens and spoilage organisms.
The main research and development, manufacturing and administrative site for Oxoid products is based in Basingstoke, UK
The Oxoid brand has existed and been trusted by microbiologists for over 50 years – for more information on the brand history visit www.oxoid.com
Prepared and Dehydrated Culture Media
Oxoid quality assured prepared media products (a wide range of ready-to-use agars broths and slopes in plate, bottle and ReadyBag formats) are manufactured in the UKAS accredited facility in Perth, Scotland. Further manufacturing facilities can be found in Germany, Canada, the USA, Australia and China. To ensure continuity of supply and quality assurance, Oxoid prepared media is made using Oxoid dehydrated culture media.
Customers can save time in media preparation and quality control and manage stock levels easily by using the Oxoid Prepared Media Service. Standing orders for product are set up to ensure that the media is delivered in volumes and timescales to suit individual customer needs; these can be varied easily by contacting a dedicated Customer Support representative.
For details of our wide range of culture media formulations and formats please speak to your local representative of Oxoid products or download the Oxoid product list from www.oxoid.com
Diagnostics and Identification
The Diagnostics Centre of Excellence, where Oxoid and Remel brand diagnostic product lines, such as latex tests, are developed and manufactured is based in Dartford, UK.
The Microbact product range for the identification of Listeria and Salmonella is produced in Australia and stocks are held locally for distribution in Europe and the Americas.
The Oxoid Rapid Food Testing Range and the O.B.I.S. biochemical product range are produced in Basingstoke.
The DuPont Qualicon BAX Q7 System for the automated detection of food pathogens and spoilage organisms is also available through representatives of Oxoid products in Europe, Australia and Canada.
New Methods and Products
The latest developments in Oxoid products and methods reflect and anticipate the changing needs in food microbiology:
Inhibigen™ technology – involves the use of an inhibitor molecule linked to a specific substrate. In this bound state, the inhibitor is non-toxic – however if taken up by a cell and cleaved from the substrate, the inhibigen molecule will prevent the organism from replicating. Only organisms with the required uptake mechanism and specific enzyme to cleave the inhibitor-substrate complex will be affected. This allows very specific inhibition of competing, non-target organisms.
Unlike conventional selective agents, such as antibiotics, Inhibigens™ can be engineered to have no inhibitory effect on the target organism – even when the cells are stressed. This means that recovery of specific organisms is improved in two ways – by reducing the growth of competing flora and by minimising exposure to potentially inhibitory components.
Brilliance™ chromogenic media – innovative chromogenic substrates within the Oxoid Brilliance range provide clearly visible answers on a single culture plate and often reduce or eliminate the need for further confirmatory testing. Brilliance media are available for Salmonella, Listeria, Bacillus cereus, E. coli/coliforms and Enterobacter (now Cronobacter)sakazakii. Brilliance Salmonella Agar is the first medium to contain Inhibigens.
Precis™ culture methods – Oxoid Precis culture methods allow isolation, detection and confirmed identification of foodborne pathogens in just 2 days without the need for specialist equipment or training. Just follow these 3 simple steps:
- Enrichment – a single broth combining resuscitation and growth in overnight incubation
- Plating – a single medium incorporating enzyme specific inhibition and differentiation. Coloured colonies clearly indicate presumptive positive results
- Confirmation – confirmed test result available in less than 10 minutes, direct from plate.
Combining the latest developments in culture media technology and rapid identification tests, the Oxoid Precis methods deliver a time to confirmed result normally only achieved with PCR and other automated methods.
Precis methods for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes, validated by AFNOR to ISO 16140, are now available.
O.B.I.S. campy – an accurate, cost effective and rapid product for the differentiation of Campylobacteraceae from other organisms with similar colonial morphology.
