A new report highlighting the health benefits of organically-grown crops has been welcomed by Kent-based frozen fruit and vegetable specialist Ardo UK.

Research by a team of international experts led by Newcastle University found eating organic fruit, vegetables and crops increased the intake of health-boosting anti-oxidants.

Stuart Hiscott, Marketing Manager at Ardo UK, said: “Frozen fruit and veg are a great way for people to enjoy a healthy, balanced diet.

“They are convenient, good value and – because they are frozen soon after picking – they retain their vitamin and minerals better than fresh produce.

“For people who want to enjoy even greater health benefits, this new research is a great endorsement of the advantages to be had from switching to organic produce – an effect equivalent to eating an extra one to two portions of fruit and veg a day.”

The study, which was published in the British Journal of Nutrition, found concentrations of antioxidants such as polyphenolics were between 18 per cent and 69 per cent higher in organically-grown crops. Numerous studies have linked antioxidants to a reduced risk of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases and certain cancers.

Ardo UK Ltd is a member of the Soil Association and has an organic range with 11 products. It supplies frozen fruit and vegetables to the UK’s leading supermarket chains and to the catering trade.
